The Nines Hotel, A Luxury Collection Hotel (Portland, OR)

Location

The hotel is very centrally located in Southwest Portland. In case you are not familiar with Portland geography the city is split into quadrants, NE, NW, SE and SW. Burnside Avenue separates north from south and the east/west divider is the river. The hotel is downtown, and easy walk from tons of shopping (including Powell’s books) eating, nightlife, the arts, the Pearl district and more hipster coffee than is humanly possible to consume.

Service

I was very happy with my service. The staff easily explained my American Express package and secured my late check out and room upgrade.

The lobby was artfully designed into different pod-like segments. Check out the photo below of the lobby from above.

Room

The room was on the small side but used the space efficiently to fit a large comfy bed, desk and window lounge.

I really enjoyed the color scheme and decor.

There is a decent view of the city and mountains out the 12th floor window.

The bathroom was generally very nice. And they give you a robe and slippers!

I would have preferred it to have a soaking tub in addition to the stall shower, but it worked.

I really appreciated the sustainable bath amenities. This LEED Silver Certified hotel not only uses pumps for shower necessities but also features lotion in recyclable packaging.

Amenities

The hotel had great amenities. The business center shown below had everything one could need but was a bit cold.

My favorite part of the gym was that they provided cool towels!

There was also a nice stretching and strength training room adjacent to the typical cardio machines.

We were lucky enough to be on the club lounge level.

The club offers breakfast, evening snacks and dessert. I was disapointed that the hours for the “meals” were very limited and they didnt have any snacks in between. It would have been nice to have crackers and fruit out all day. In terms of beverages the lounge only offers wine and beer, no hard alcohol.

The rooftop restaurant Departure was open late and hopping on Thursday night. The late night menu consists of overpriced dim sum fusion snacks. We didn’t mind the price since we had more food and beverage credit than we knew how to spend.

Apparently the restaurant has a nice rooftop bar, we did not get to check that out but from what I hear it is worth a visit, even if you aren’t staying at the hotel!

The hotel’s other restaurant is Urban Farmer, a steakhouse focused on using local ingredients. I really enjoyed the decor. Everything was green and purple, just like my wedding colors! haha!

We ate there for breakfast; I was on a mission to use the $60 of breakfast credit we had. Soon found out that would not be hard. So yes, Urban Farmer was also pricey, but take a look at this beautiful smoked salmon platter we got!

Value

I was very happy with what I got based on what I paid, especially considering the perks I got through American Express. I would knock the hotel one point on value since Portland in general has many great deals so this may not have been the best in terms of bang for the buck. My perception of value may also be warped coming from San Francisco but I wanted a luxury experience and was willing to pay a premium for it.
